DAY 74

This night was a nightmare. By far the worst night on the trip. After a hot day on the bike they lay down in the tent that holds 30 degrees at least. Everything is wet; the sleeping bag, the mattresses, the bodies, the tent, the towels – everything. The boys must open the door to get in fresher air and be able to breathe.

The mosquitos don’t deny themselves and at least 20-40 mosquitoes came into the tent. Anders wakes up and decides to kill a handful. He sees mosquitoes that have drunken so much blood that they barely can fly. It’s a lot of bloodstains on the tent, but Anders’ efforts doesn’t help. It’s to many of them. If he were suicidal he would have found a tree and hung himself but he isn’t. He gets up and searches cover in the restaurant. Lasse keeps sleeping and is now the only target.

Lasse describes it as his “worst night ever” in a youthful way. They have both realized that it might not be the cycling that is the biggest challenge ahead, but the nights and the lack of sleep. The heat, humidity and mosquitoes makes it very uncomfortable. It’s only hope of a better future with less mosquitoes and less humidity that gets them to keep going. But how naive can they be? It’s summer and they are cycling north. Of course it is going to be warmer, wetter and wilder for every day.

They cycled 95 km today and are now in Sarina. Tomorrow is a short distance and the Saturday can come and crush the dreams of a white (alcohol free) month.

More photos to follow tomorrow. The last 10 km today was wet!
