DAY 14
Lasse found some pills at the local supermarket Monday night, magnesium. Several people have recommended them to take magnesium to avoid muscle cramps, since they are bicycling DAY after day after day. If it works they don’t know but 160 tablets was bought. Magnesium supposedly also helps improving sleep.
Tuesday morning the alarm goes of at 7:30 and is postponed to 08:10. Same morning routine everyday. Bathroom, pack the sleeping mat and bag, pack bikebags and hook them on to the bike before breakfast. One small can of tuna fish and one banana each. And then go hunting for drinkable water for our bottles. In the springs here it is “town water” and it can not be drunken and tastes shit. The locals either buy water or boil the “town water”. A nice Caravan owner with all of teeth randomly placed in his mouth offers Anders water from their Caravan. They are saved, again.
In Norway we have the ice cream van that drives around the neighborhood to sell Ice cream. It is also known as the van driving around playing annoying music with the possibility of ruining any family dinner since they kids want ice cream instead of finishing their meal. In Australia they have the water-van driving in small villages delivering or selling water on the doors. Norwegians are privileged to have clean drinkable water accessible everywhere.
Today the boys are cycling from Portland to Warrnambool. This is the longest distance so far, 105 k’s was elapsed. The rain turned to sun and it was a really nice stage, but long and hard by all means. After they had been cycling at the highway, they took a cycle-track with 10 k’s left to Warrnambol. It was big detour, but it was completely safe without traffic.
The boys got to see a rich birdlife on a lake, and cows and sheeps as always. Here the cows and sheeps graze together and it doesn’t take more to fascinate Anders and Lasse. Towards the end of the detour a massive fabric shows up. The area nearby smelled so bad and they wondered what sham this could be. As the ride by one of the gates they peak in and figure out what makes the smell. It is a huge pile of pig waste on the asphalt. Large machines comes back and forth taking the pig waste into the fabric. An incinerator for offal. The people working there probably need to take a shower or two, before their wives let them come in.
18:00 and the tent is up, now one thing remains; dinner.
Awesomestralia – a normal life is boring
