HARRY
DAY 66
After the boys were forced to take a resting day in Gympie with service, they have now gotten to Maryborough a 100 km further north. On Wednesday Anders’ Bike went from being incredible to useless in the blink of an eye. Anders needed a new wheel and amazingly it’s The Bike Butler in Brisbane that becomes the savior. He drives two hours from Brisbane and delivers the wheel in Gympie. He does the driving and the job itself for free, but the wheel is very expensive and costs around half of what the bike did. A financial let down although Anders had no choice and therefore didn’t hesitate. Looking on the bright side, what if this had happened in a much more remote place, what would they do then?!
Out from the old Gold town Gympie they got on road 15 that goes through Tuan Forest to Maryborough. For the first time in four days it doesn’t rain. It is 25 degrees, cloudy and the road is dry. There is no road shoulder so a few trucks comes closer than they prefer, but all in all it’s okay. They do 42 km before lunch and that is 42 km with planted forest. Very similar to the
Landscape they saw further south in the country.
After a short stop with cookies, canned beans and powerade they continue on the last 60 km. The road gets flatter, the traffic eases and headwind turns to tailwind. Lasse tries to rationalize the water he got but doesn’t known that further ahead Anders had received a 1,5 liter of water. Anders drinks half and gives the rest to Lasse who
Is just around the corner. Meanwhile a horse crosses the road, confirming that the signs are there for a reason. Wild horse or just a horse being in a fence less area? Same Sam but different.
It’s Friday and randomly they end up eating at “Harry’s Thai Food” which is right across the street from the caravan park. “Not many people in Thailand named Harry” Lasse says. More than you think Anders thinks but doesn’t say out loud as he don’t want to be stigmatizing towards the Norwegian who has settled down there. Anders and Lasse visited the land of the smiles 5 years ago. They order the usual, red curry for Lasse and green curry for Anders. The man in the restaurant wonders where the boys are from. He made great food, was really nice and Lasse meant he had kind eyes. The man said “safe travels guys and be careful, there is some idiots out there”.
It’s Friday and the boys is having a white alcohol free months after a wet Christmas holiday. It’s a short month since it is only going to last until Australia Day that falls on Anders Birthday, that means beers.
Tomorrow the target is Bundaberg.
