STREET FOOD
DAY 55
A break in the Christmas celebrations and back to the cycle seat. The impurities in their legs are gone after three resting days. Or “resting” days, the boys partied one day or two, ate and drank well, stayed up late and spoke a lot with those home in Norway. They checked out before lunch on Monday and the boys had to pay 10 dollar for a movie they didn’t watch. Some discussions you just let go and don’t enter.
It’s a bit messy getting from Surfers Paradise to Brisbane. The M1 is closed for cyclists which is a bit strange since they same road is more or less open for cyclist all the way from Sydney to Surfers Paradise. Good thing the cycle road V1 popped up and gave Anders and Lasse more or less a safe travel almost all the way. They lost the cycle track a few times that led to some detours. Lasse was also horribly close to get hit by a car today but luckily it went well. A car decided not to give way to Lasse when he were supposed to, leading to other cars honking. Lasse thought for a moment there this will not end well.
With 30 km left it started to rain heavily and very intense. Since the boys are cycling and the temperature is okay they decide not to put on rainwear. All the sunscreen is washed of their skin and rainwater with a taste of sunscreen runs down on their lips. They are soaking wet and Lasse finds a motel they can check into 15 km before Brisbane. Tomorrow they are only going to deliver the bicycles on service and rent a car before they head to visit old familiar faces.
Monday night they walk along the street to find a restaurant that is open on Boxing Day. Only coincidence leads them to an Indian street food restaurant. The restaurant is packed with people and they have to wait for a table. After 10 minutes they enter the restaurant where not a single person isn’t from India. The blond boys stands as to towers in the middle of the restaurant, lightening up the place. Everybody there curious about what the two Norwegians are doing here. Some smile, some points and some laughs. “We are the only western people here Anders, or at least the only ones with a western look” Lasse points out.
Like at many other restaurants in Australia you have to order food at the register and pay at once. Lasse walks up to order for the both of them. “I didn’t get to order what we wanted, he said it would be way too much for two people!” Lasse says when he gets back to the table. Lasse decided to trust the man instead of his guts. Even though they both were starving it turned out the man was right. Five dishes on the table and they were all quite big. They put the last dish on hold until they had control. The old guy next to them had probably never seen anything like it with two Norwegians making fajitas out of the Indian course Thalai. People smiled and laughed as the boys had to admit defeat and leave some food behind. An amazing meal.
